Snickers Fiercely

…that’s not her ‘official’ name, i just happen to think it funky.

this spunky lass who looks like she just thought of a dirty joke is a mascot design of sorts for the Maverick Movie Awards film festival (formerly the New Haven Underground Film Festival), sort an identity rep. Like Erin Esurance, only less helpful and more likely to spike the punch bowl or threaten you with sharp objects. Okay, nothing like her, really.

Lunch Manga

i did this awhile back as a promo for Adventures of Johnny Bunko and it never got used, that I know of. I think it had been a year since I’d finished the book and drawing the characters again felt kind of nice, in fact i’d missed them. Anyway, they’d been gathering dust just sitting in a forgotten folder so i thought i’d share.

Johnny and Diana might not be iconic characters known throughout the land, but as the main components of my first real piece of published works, they still mean a lot to me personally.

ja, mata ;)

cut to the quick

awhile back i posted the original concept of this character: [link]

but i’m by no means done with Mani Quick :D I like her name too much.

I updated this character, refitted her to be slightly younger, and contemporized her setting. Lately my “fun writing” has gotten bogged down with a lot of expository sci-fi claptrap and I wanted Mani to be more straightforward. Present-day american tomboy, still a jerk, still a smartaleck. With time I hope to actually present her story.

left to right: everyday clothes, school uniform (can tell she loves it) and “Bones”—part of Mani’s story revolves around the fact that she’s created an alternate persona for herself, kind of like a superhero alter ego (even though it’s just her with a funky cap, facepaint, and a bat). In scary and/or unfamiliar situations, Mani relies on this as psychological armor. It’s especially vexing to her parents because it’s as much deliberate as it is mental. It’s also vexing because “Bones” likes to trespass and smash things ^^;

anyway…simple sketches. later.

Motorfish: Charlotte

commission for :iconmotorfish: of his character Charlotte. please note that his work is effin’ sweet and you would do well to check it out!

(side note: yes, i’ve finally gotten around to doing my commission obligations which have hung around far too long, hehe…hang in there!)

so yeah: character copyright to :iconmotorfish: and his tasty, tasty brainz :D

Badimo

Incoming WoW-nerdery….*sigh*

with the release of the Wrath expansion for world of warcraft came the introduction of the hero class, one which i promised myself i’d never play, or if i did, it’d be when the novelty had worn off and you could swing a new class without being up to your eyeballs in people doing the same.

being teh hardcorez troll supremacist that i am, and faced with the ability to create a reanimated hero troll clad in heavy armor and commanding powers of death and frost, it took about 2 minutes for me to take the path of least resistance.

anyway, this here is my troll death knight, Badimo. the name seemed apt, as according to Wiki:
The term “Badimo”, although usually translated as “ancestors” does not simply refer to people who are now dead, but rather to the “living dead”. In the traditional African worldview, deceased ancestors continue to be present and are actively included in the daily life of individuals and tribes. NERRRRRRRRRRRRD!

usually when i do a piece i kick it around for about a day before going “Ehhh that’s good enough.” I had this one cooking for quite a while, coming back to it now and then and basically trying new things when they came to me. I think i like it, but it sure tried my patience. I guess you could call it a “safety” piece…when i got fed up with my efforts on other works i’d come back to this and doodle just to feel like i was still working.

characters and concepts based, of course, on the works of Blizzard Entertainment, the pushers…

Black Jenny

nother character sketch. woo hoo!

Black Jenny is the name given to a particularly twisted phantom that haunts the byways and disused roads of the wastelands. It’s said that she was once a strange princess of some forgotten and long-dead kingdom, and that she was two halves of light and shadow that devoured one another to mirror the rise and fall of the sun. Somewhere along the line, the skies blackened, the sun didn’t rise, and the dark half of the princess ate up the other half.

In any event, Black Jenny has become the patron deity of dead highways and forgotten paths. If a traveler becomes lost or seeks someone or something that can’t be found, Jenny knows the way and knows where you can find them, but the cost is prohibitive, assuming you even make it to the bargaining stage. Popular wisdom holds that enough lanterns and a strong will can arrest Jenny’s attention long enough for you to get a few words in.

this character is, oddly enough, in the same story vein as Mani [link] . May they never meet :XD:

Red leaf

i was gonna color this, but i’m kind of busy drawing other stuff at the moment so a sketch submission will have to do. i might update this with a colored version down the line but whatever.

this is a developmental sketch of the pivotal character in a story i’m working on, and his name is Red Leaf (it’d make more sense with color). I’ve always wanted a central character with minimal voice, and Red’s about as close to a mute as you can get–he technically can talk, but only with a limited piece of hardware wired to his throat. It’s like a voice box, but half worthless since Red’s strange set of rules hold action in higher esteem than vocal function, even at the cost of convenience.

since a good chunk of him is mechanical (he’s kind of a mishmash of organism, mecha, and…well, ghost) and made from spare parts spanning several known eras, his actual age is indeterminate, as his organism has long since ceased to age and most of his functions are either mechanized or arcane in nature. His hat and all its sensory apparatus are inextricably wired to his head. He appears to have a great deal of communication equipment as well, but as to whom he communicates with, it’s uncertain.

Red’s a nomad in the purest sense of the term. His only companion is a large sentient quadrupedal “eat-tank” (to be submitted later, hehe) which devours scrap metal, living organisms, and, literally, dreams.

to travelers or wanderers, Red is regarded with uncertainty as both a harbinger of good fortune or doom. He’s said to track and follow nightmares, or to unearth hidden things in ancient ruins, but has also been known to doggedly pursue drifting tumbleweeds for days at a time, so who knows what his priorities are. In spite of all the rumors, he might just be a silly kid with a warped attention span.

i’m getting wordy with the descriptions lately. better dial it back. :XD:

Mani Quick

i’d started this sketch while in the cities. my interest in the stories i write is sometimes sporadic (i.e. Bomango, Elkchild, etc, hehe) but this one has more written than sketched.

Mani here is a young girl who looks sort of boyish and is completely fine with that. She has a competition to her and an almost pathological need to be top dog, so she’ll fight most anyone. In spite of the tomboy appearance, she’s also quite good at pulling the “ice queen” routine, and loves to wield her stickball apparatus and her cape with a royal flair. (The cape is actually a common piece of fashion amongst her people, she’s just a real prick about it)

she’s a parent’s worst nightmare in other ways too. Other than sowing discord amongst her peers and thumbing her nose at the idea of actually studying anything, she has a profound sense of adventure, a penchant for confrontation, and is a practiced pro at sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong. And don’t you forget it, or it’s the stick for you!

Mani’s also the name of one of my WoW trolls, but that’s hardly my own character, and i love the name :XD:

Rurik and Ziv

more from The Lost Girl…an unlettered page featuring two super-friendly guys: Rurik (brown jacket) and Ziv (blue jacket)

These two guys aren’t what they seem, to put it vaguely, and if they seem like a pair of rather feral-looking boys then you’re only half right. Rurik is a head-cracker with a heart of gold or at least some kind of valuable mineral, and Ziv is…less lovable.

The Lost Girl is written by Michael Mongillo and illustrated by some monkey with a computer :D

Evasion

one of the concept illustrations for my current project, The Lost Girl (written by Michael Mongillo)

this, again, is Joy, who’s had a rough day. As you might have inferred, she’s a bit lost. (studio audience laughter)

Joy is an interesting character: optimistic, cheerful, but as depicted here, also a something of a survivalist. I liked her immediately.
